OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

Occupational health is about how work and the work environment can affect an employee’s health and equally how an employee’s health can affect their ability to do the job

Work Related Illnesses

In 2005 there were some 28.4 million working days lost to ill health and injury caused or made worse by work.
On average each person suffering took an estimated 23.1 days off.
The cost to the economy is about £10-£12 billion.

Musculoskeletal disorders (bone, joint or muscle problems) are by far the most commonly reported work related illnesses. Of these, back problems are the most prevalent (45%) with upper limb and leg pain also contributing.(Labour Force Survey 2005)

Many of these problems are caused by poor working practices and could be avoided.
